IT’S THE MOST WINE-DERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR

Hey guys! Today’s blog is dedicated to keeping your skin hydrated over the festive period. We are going to provide a few little tips and tricks that help you look after your skin during boozy December!

Before we begin, it is important to remember that this is the most wonderful time of the year for good reason, it’s the time to fill your plate and get merry! We all love to indulge, especially at Christmas. Today’s blog is more about wanting to make sure you’re informed about what alcohol can do to your skin and for me to spread the Christmas cheer (and seasonal skin tips)

Alcohol can have quite a few short and long-term effects on the skin if not maintained properly. One of the biggest things that alcohol can cause is dehydration of your skin. Due to the diuretic effects of alcohol, when we drink, it can cause the skin to lose the fluids and nutrients needed to keep it looking soft and glowy. It can in some cases, increase the likelihood of skin conditions such as eczema and rosacea. And it’s not just eczema that may be more prominent to show up on your skin, drinking alcohol can also increase the likelihood of dark circles around the eyes, dandruff, a feeling of being bloated or puffy. (Bet that wasn’t on your Christmas list!)

Alcohol can also disrupt your body clock, and ability to stay asleep. While yes, you may be able to fall asleep faster when you’ve had a few, it doesn’t necessarily stay that way. According to The Sleep Foundation, drinking a small to moderate amount of alcohol can reduce sleep quality anywhere from 9% to 24%.

Dr. Frieling,, a Massachusetts based dermatopathologist notes that when we get enough sleep, it gives dozens of anti-aging benefits to the skin, such as the increase in production of collagen to help reduce sagging skin and wrinkles and helps to rejuvenate the body’s immune system, body weight, and mental health. (Anti-aging? Yes please Santa!)

Not getting enough sleep can leave your body feeling tired and disrupt your sleep cycle, which can affect your skin’s pH levels, potentially lowering the moisture levels of your skin, depleting its natural glow. And nothing should dull your sparkle at Christmas!

There are a few homemade tips that the Dewcy team has come up with to help bring you and your skin back to where it once was. For one, hydration is indeed key. Making sure you have enough water to balance out the alcohol and stomach acids is paramount to keeping yourself hangover free and your skin shine.

My skin saviour has always been to fill up bottles of water and have them on my bedside for when I get home. I drink them all before bed and this has always been a massive help in keeping me away from the dreaded hangover. Sarah, the founder of Dewcy, likes to keep herself hydrated as she goes, her tip for keeping hydrated involves a ration of one glass of water for every alcoholic drink. In attempts to balance out the negative effects of alcohol so you don’t end up too hungover the next morning. And thirdly, Kodie, our lovely social media guru, makes sure to always remove her make up before bed, as leaving your makeup on overnight leaves your skin more prone to clogged pores, breakouts, and blackheads.

It has been a wild year for us all, and I think we all deserve to treat ourselves this festive season. So get out there, grab some friends, grab some drinks and have some fun, we hope our tips help this holiday season!

Merry Christmas! I hope you all enjoy yourself to your fullest.

Alex xoxo
