TREND FORECASTING 2023
In this week’s blog entry we will be looking into the depths of our hypothetical crystal ball and forecasting some of the trends that are set to take this year by storm.
Starting with skincare: (it’s kinda our thing)
Gen Z are renowned for their new approach to ‘taboo’ and the wave of openness that has swept across the platform. It seems nothing is off the cards when it comes to discussing bacne, period skin, razor bumps, bloating, gut health, or anything else for that matter. The act of oversharing has caused a shift in consumerism, whereby customers expect products to not only be inclusive of/ and market towards these real-life issues, but also aid in solving them. At last, edited advertisements are no longer enough, and due to the rise in skinfluencer reviews, there is a demand for real results.
We believe 2023 will provide a blurred line between makeup and skincare and as a result, birth a line of hybrid skincare-makeup products. 2022 saw search engines flood with questions on how to achieve ‘glowy’ and ‘glazed’ skin, this derives from our innate desire to have healthy looking skin. This has almost surpassed being a trend and can be recognised as a shift in culture that isn’t going away anytime soon! Dewy skin is here to stay, and we are here for it!
Dermatologist, Nicolas Kluger states that, the COVID-19 pandemic introduced a plethora of skin hacks and remedies to do at home. Excessive hand and face washing, alongside the practice of wearing facemasks and various other forms of PPE, has contributed to the increase in people who suffer with sensitive skin. This has influenced the surge in products being created with sensitive skin in mind, and it seems this will continue to be a prevalent part of skincare going forward.
Skincare becomes swallowable????????
Makeup
Is makeup back in?! Granted, it never really went anywhere. However, the no makeup, makeup look has been stealing the show and skin minimalism has brushed the colourful eye looks of the past, under the carpet. However, blush has strutted into 2023 like a new Love Island bombshell. Yellow blush and pale pink powdered under eyes have swamped TikTok over the past few months, it seems blush is getting bolder by the minute and is migrating from the apples of cheeks up towards the temples for a punchy look you won’t forget! There’s a new contouring hack in town and it’s coined, “Underpainting.’ Created by the talented Mary Phillips, MUA to Kendall Jenner and Hailey Bieber, says “think of it as laying down the bones before you start applying your makeup”. A subtle approach to contouring but definitely one we are trying out this spring! As the world continues to be captivated with Y2K aesthetics we see a return of the frosted lip and shimmery eye, any colour goes so get creative lovelies!
The controversy surrounding whether winged eyeliner has been put in the bin, has been keeping me up at night. After doing some digging, it seems that millennial black liner, over the lid, is dead and gone. Whilst brown ‘baby liner’, which is essentially the tail of the liner, is still acceptable to leave the house with (Phew!). However, graphic liner is in full force and has been since the tv show, Euphoria aired in 2020. In conclusion, eyeliner in some form, has been fashionable since the 1950’s and will likely continue to be part of our makeup routine with slight tweaks to look less ‘cat-eye’ and more ‘siren-eye’ in 2023.
It is important to remember, that trends come and go, and often they come back round again. Whilst it is fun to observe consumer culture and current crazes, it is also crucial that we remember that it is not others who get to dictate what we enjoy: it is us. Being healthy, happy and yourself will always be ‘in’.
All that being said, get clipped in, as 2023 is gonna be a wild ride lovelies!
Xoxo
