FUN IN THE SUN
The last week of May marks National Safe Sun Week. As the warm rays of the sun beckon us outdoors, it's easy to forget that our skin needs extra care and protection. While basking in the sun can be delightful, prolonged exposure to harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays can lead to various skin issues, including sunburn, premature aging, and an increased risk of skin cancer.
It’s crucial to prioritise sun safety and adopt preventive measures to shield your skin from the sun's damaging effects. In this comprehensive guide, we will delve into the essentials of sun protection, providing you with practical tips, expert advice, and product recommendations to ensure your skin stays safe, healthy, and radiant all year round.
1. SPF: Skin’s Protective Friend 😉
We all have that one super protective friend; well sun block is exactly that for your skin! Remember, practicing sun safety is a year-round commitment, not just during the summer months. Applying a daily SPF 30 or higher is a simple step that’s easy to implement with incredible benefits.
2. Don't Forget About Your Lips and Eyes:
Lips and eyes are often overlooked but equally vulnerable to sun damage. Protect your lips with a lip balm containing SPF, and wear sunglasses that block 100% of UV rays to safeguard your eyes and the delicate skin around them.
3. Seek Shade During Peak Hours:
The sun's rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Whenever possible, seek shade during these hours to minimize direct exposure.
4. Protect Your Scalp and Hair:
Don't forget to protect your scalp and hair from the sun. Burning your scalp and having direct heat on your head is like purchasing a sure ticket to sun stroke town.
5. Monitor Your Skin:
Regularly examine your skin for any changes, including new moles, growths, or discoloration. If you notice any concerning changes, consult a dermatologist promptly. Early detection and treatment of skin issues are crucial for maintaining skin health.
6. Stay Hydrated:
Sun exposure can lead to dehydration, so it's crucial to stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, especially when engaging in outdoor activities. Proper hydration helps maintain healthy skin and supports your body's overall well-being.
7. Hydrate and Nourish Your Skin:
Keep your skin hydrated and nourished from the outside too. Use moisturisers that provide hydration and include ingredients like antioxidants to protect against free radicals caused by sun exposure.
